This tour begins in Malta, Montana, a once-thriving
little cattle town and a crossroads were cattlemen, farmers, miners, and
Native Americans crossed paths with one another and with the railroad.
Focused on north central Montana, this tour will especially explore Native
American heritage and the history of the area known as the Montana
Hi-Line. We will began with a short tour of Malta and it's rich history, focusing on local outlaws, farming, ranching, mining and basic industry beginning in the 1890s. Then we'll head west down the famous highway 2 through the little towns of Dodson, Harlem, Zurich, Chinook, and finally, Havre. We will spend a lot of our time at the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation Agency as well as meet and talk to old timers who know the oral history of the era. We'll discuss railroad history along the way as we stop in Chinook and visit the Blain County Museum, then make the short drive to the Chief Joseph battlefield. In Havre we'll visit significant landmarks, such as the Don Graytack art studio, the Great Northern Railway station, and the Havre Underground. Collectively, these landmarkes offer a great cross-section of area history. |
